Jamie Carol Cook

Jamie Carol Cook, 29, of Madison Heights, passed away Oct. 22, 2008.

Born May 30, 1979, in Annapolis, Md., she was a member of Tree of Life Ministries and was employed as a case worker at Central Virginia Community Services. Jamie was a caring, compassionate, helpful and loving sister and friend. She touched the hearts of many people. She gave others the strength needed to know to never give up — hope floats.

Jamie was preceded in death by her biological mother, Sandra Lynn Rhoten Cook; maternal and paternal grandparents, James (Mary) Rhoten and Carol (Bonnie) Cook; and nephew, David K. Mathisen.

She has left to cherish her memory her “adoptive” family, Dave (Bonnie) Mathisen of Bluffton, S.C., Jim (Alysia) Lumley and Kris (Laura) Mathisen, all of Annapolis, Md.; biological father, Daniel Elden Cook of Pasadena, Md.; brother, Ryan Cook of Denton, Md.; special friends, Marilyn Gadomski, June Harvie-McNamara, Crystal Stearn; and many other friends that hold a special place in her heart.

A memorial service was conducted Nov. 1 at Tree of Life Ministries by Pastor Mike Dodson. Private interment was in Tree of Life Cemetery.

Franklin Delano ‘Chick’ Cooper

Franklin Delano “Chick” Cooper, 74, of Madison Heights, died Oct. 25 at the home of his daughter, Janice.

Born Jan. 30, 1934, in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Calvin E. and Nellie Tyree Cooper. He was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. “Chick” was a member of American Legion Post 16 for 40 years and was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his “special parents,” William Percy Toler and Hazel Tyree Vickers, and two brothers, Kenneth and Pete Cooper.

“Chick” is survived by two daughters, Janice M. Moore of Lynchburg and Debora Goodbar of Madison Heights; three sons, Charles David Cooper of Madison Heights, William Prescott Cooper and his wife, Natavan, of Dayton, Ohio, and Harry Russell Cooper of Madison Heights; one brother, Gary Cooper and his wife, Yvonne, of Mt. Sterling, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by special friends, Eddie and Bonnie Thomason and Dean and Mary Wickham, and special caregivers, Kathy Rush and Chawndray Andrews.

A graveside service with military honors by American Legion Post 16 was conducted in Meade Cemetery by the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton.

Owen Talmadge ‘Tally’ Cox

Owen Talmadge “Tally” Cox, 72, of Goode, passed away Oct. 23 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Janet Ann Noell Cox.

Tally was born in Lynchburg on Jan. 21, 1936. He was the son of the late Powhatan Moorman Cox and Elizabeth Franklin Cox. He was a Bedford County farmer and a retired draftsman from Ericsson Inc., formerly General Electric, where he had a combined service of 40 years. He was a 1957 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in animal husbandry. Tally was twice president of Goode Ruritan Club and also president of Brookville Ruritan Club in the early 1970s. He was the district governor of the Peaks of Otter Ruritan District in 1975. He served six years in the Army National Guard in Lynchburg. He was a former member of Beulah Baptist Church and a member of Terrace View Baptist Church and also a life member of Bedford Community Health Foundation Inc. He was a bluegrass musician and member of the Roanoke Fiddle and Banjo Club.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Elizabeth Ann Coleman and husband, Mike, of Forest, Donna Gay Dobyns and husband, Leland, of Goode, Lisa Gayle Anderson and husband, Richard, of Goode, and Lee Talmadge and his wife, Rebecca Oldham, of Madison Heights; his sisters, Loretta Davis and husband, Preston, Carole Amiss and husband, Caroll, and Patty Burchett, all of Lynchburg; and his grandchildren, Michael Dobyns and wife, Glory, of Bedford, Joshua Dobyns of Goode, Lesley Anderson of Goode and Emily Cox of Lynchburg.

A funeral service was conducted Oct. 27 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lee Cox officiating. Interment followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Bill Evans Jr.

Bill Evans Jr., 51, of Roseland, died Nov. 2 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Lynchburg on Sept. 2, 1957, he was the son of Billoup and Eva Johnson Evans. He was a foreman for Fitzgerald’s Orchard and was a member of Kingswood Baptist Church. Bill loved to hunt and fish, and was loved by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Ann King and her husband, Ronald L. King of Monroe; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and devoted friends, Frances Fisher, Ronnie Roberts and Bernard Franklin.

Funeral services were conducted Nov. 5 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Pastor Mike Wells, with burial in Jonesboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday and other times at his sister’s home, 956 Wagontrail Road, Monroe.

Deacon Frederick Douglas Garland Jr. ‘Big Poo’

Deacon Frederick Douglas Garland Jr., 42, of 123 Beagle Lane, Madison Heights, departed this life Oct. 26 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

He was the son of the late Frederick Garland Sr. and Doretha Garland.

He is survived by his wife, Lawane Watkins Garland; two children, Jarrett and Jurney Garland; two sisters, Francina Thomas (William) of Madison Heights and Kathleen Paige (Albert); one brother, Tyrone (Michelle) of Lynchburg; father and mother-in-law, Harry and Martha Watkins; one brother-in-law, Damand Watkins (Angie) all of Concord; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was conducted Oct. 30 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery. Condolences can be e-mailed to Community Funeral Home directed.

Jane Marie Hudson

Jane Marie Hudson, 67 of Shipman, died Nov. 10 at UVa Medical Center.

She was born March 7, 1941, in Rustburg, a daughter of the late Odell Hudson and Nevie Jennings Hudson.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother; Russell Hudson and two sisters; Naomi Goff and Judy Hudson.

She is survived by two sisters; Glenda Sue Grant of Shipman and Viola H. McDaniel of Shannon, Mississippi; three brothers; Irvin (Butch) Hudson, Phillip E. Hudson, and Raymond O. Hudson all of Lynchburg, an aunt Evelyn Duff of Madison Heights as well as numerous nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was conducted at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with Pastor Nancy Grant and Pastor Betty Parrish officiating. 

Interment followed in the Amherst Cemetery in Amherst.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of donation to the Antioch Church, 827 Browning Cove Road, Shipman, VA 22971.

Albert ‘Earl’ List

Albert “Earl” List, 79, of Lynchburg, died Oct. 28 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Sylvia Sandford List.

Born Oct. 1, 1929, in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Albert Frederick List and H. Jean Foster Doyle. He was retired from the U.S. Government, Department of Labor and was a U.S. Army veteran. Earl was a member of the Falls Church Episcopal Church, Falls Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Edward Doyle Jr.

Besides his wife, Earl is survived by three daughters, Debbie List Payne and husband, Dorland, of Madison Heights, Valerie List Owens and husband, Gary, of Wilmington, N.C., and Cheryl List Curcio and husband, Jeff, of Lynchburg; one sister, Susanne Howard of Md.; five grandchildren, Jessica, Kimberly, Brandon, Wesley, and Amanda and one great-grandchild, Emma and numerous step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Nov. 2 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

Cordelia Louise Grogan Massie ‘Miss Kitty’

Cordelia Louise Grogan Massie, “Miss Kitty,” 66, of Monroe, passed away Oct. 25 at UVa. She is survived by her husband, Dallas Weldon Massie.

Born May 12, 1942, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Russell Blain Grogan and Louise Wood Doty. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. She was a member of Lynchburg Chapter #54 and Amherst Chapter #115, Order of the Eastern Star, and had worked for Amherst County Schools as a bus driver. She was a big bluegrass fan.

Survivors also include four children, Dallas Wayne Massie and wife, Teresa, of Appomattox, Russell Weldon Massie and wife, Cheryl, of Appomattox, Debora Sue Pundt and husband, David, of Petersburg, and Joseph Henry Massie and wife, Nicole, of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sisters, Charlotte G. Bailey of Charlottesville, her twin sister, Claudia G. Guthrie “Pee Wee” of Stewartsville, and Margaret G. Lawhorn and husband, Bobby, of Rustburg; 10 grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service was conducted Nov. 1 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Douglas Turner. Interment was in Allwood Cemetery.

James ‘Crow’ Musgrove

James Carrington Musgrove, 68, of Madison Heights, died Oct. 25 at his residence. Born Sept. 13, 1940, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Myrtle Harris Musgrove and Carl Wooldridge Musgrove. He was the loving husband of Lois McConnell Musgrove for 29 years.

In addition to his wife, Crow is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Taylor and her husband, Chuck, of Madison Heights; a son, Barry Sligh, and his wife, Brandi, of Lynchburg; a grandson, Cody Taylor of Madison Heights; two granddaughters, Robin Taylor of Madison Heights and Devin Sligh, of Lynchburg; a sister in-law, Maggie Musgrove, of Lynchburg; and four nieces, Colby, Carla, Amy, and Sarah.

Crow was also preceded in death by a brother C.F. “Grumpy” Musgrove and a sister, Sue Smith.

Crow was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the military he became a self taught electrician and opened his own business, Musgrove Electric. This he ran for 25 years. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
