George William Almarode
George William Almarode, 81, of Grottoes, died on June 21.
He was born June 14, 1927 in Waynesboro, and was the son of the late George R. and Maggie Darnell Almarode.
He was a member of the Basic United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, the Grottoes V.F.W. and the Waynesboro Antique Car Club. He was an Army veteran of post-World War II and Korea and enjoyed restoring antique cars and fishing. He owned and operated Almarode Lock and Key before retiring and previously worked as a supervisor at Grace Company (Wayne-Tex) in Waynesboro.
On May 23, 1969, he married Venda (Shifflett) Almarode, who survives. Also surviving are a son, George W. Almarode II and his wife, Cindy, of Chesterfield; a daughter, Peggy Lam and special friend, Jeff Baugher, of McGaheysville; a sister, Ida A. Showker, of Staunton; grandsons, Zack Almarode, Tommy Almarode, Mike Allen and his wife, Lindsey, Eddie Allen and his wife, Cathy; and three great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Paul Almarode, Carl Almarode, T. Nelson Robinson, Ola Bowles; and a granddaughter, Brittany Lam.
A funeral service was conducted on June 24 at the St. Stephens and the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar near Elkton. Burial followed in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.
George E. Booker Sr.
George E. Booker Sr., 98, of Gladstone, formerly of Washington, D.C., died on March 29.
Born in the Tower Hill area of Appomattox County on May 23, 1909, he was the son of the late John R. Booker and Bertha Coleman Booker.
He was predeceased by his wife, Martha, of 72 years; six brothers; and three sisters.
He was a member of Liberty Chapel Baptist Church, Appomattox, served in the Army Medical Corps Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., from 1927 to 1933, ran a grist mill in the Tower Hill area from 1933 to 1938, was fire chief at Bolling AFB in Washington, D.C., from 1941 until he retired in 1965, and was a member of Masonic National Lodge #12 in Washington, D.C.
A seasonal resident of Florida from 1968 to 1984, he resided in the Gladstone area until returning to Florida in 1996.
Survivors include his son, George E. Booker Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mexico; two daughters, Marlyn Brause of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Ruth Howard (Bob) of Newport News and St. Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren, Ronald McFarland, Pat McFarland, Wendy Accardi (John), all of St. Petersburg, Fla., Marshall Muros of Okeechobee, Fla., Scott E. Booker of Vancouver, Wash., and Lesli Torres-Abreu (Luis) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by two sisters, Bernie Arnold of Newport News and Alyce Vaitkus (Tom) of Virginia Beach; one sister-in-law, Beverly Booker of Gladstone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 28 at Liberty Chapel Baptist Church, 4559 Liberty Chapel Road, Appomattox, VA 24522.
Annie Belle Turner Brown
Annie Belle Turner Brown, 73, formerly of Waynesboro, died on June 19.
She had been a resident of Ruxton Nursing Home in Staunton.
She was born July 9, 1934, in Nelson County, the daughter of the late Lynn and Alvetta Turner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Brown, and a son, Harold Brown.
Surviving relatives include four sons, Nelson Brown of Waynesboro, William Brown of Amherst, Jessie Brown and Harry Brown, both of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Rebecca Brown and Angie Brown both of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, John William Turner of Faber; one sister, Mary E. Gray of Afton; one niece, Actline Cabell of Waynesboro; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held on June 23 at the Elk Hill Baptist Church in Wintergreen. Burial was at the Glen Maury Cemetery in Wintergreen.
Edward James Cain Jr.
Edward James Cain Jr., 66, died on June 21.
Born Feb. 26, 1942, in Essex County, N.J., he was the son of the late Edward James Cain Sr. and Florence Flanagan Cain. He was a member of the Piney River Moose Lodge #2032.
He is survived by a son, Ronald Edward Cain of Madison Heights; three daughters, Lisa C. Tomlin and husband, Gregory, and Peggy C. Inscoe and husband, Dennis, all of Amherst, and Diane C. Birch and husband, Donald, of Madison Heights, and their mother, Peggy M. Cain of Madison Heights; nine grandchildren, Anna and Clifton Tomlin, Sonya, Steven and Stacey Stevens, Dillon, Matt and Jamie Inscoe and Scott Day; one great-grandson; and a special friend, Marie Tomlin of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Wilk and Carol Ann Fusco.
The family received friends on June 24 at the residence.
Tiffany Ann Clarkson
Tiffany Ann Clarkson, 25, of Lynchburg, died on June 18.
Born Sept. 30, 1982, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Barry D. Clarkson and Pam Wright Clarkson of Lynchburg.
She was a graduate of Amherst County High School where she sang in the choir. She was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Nathan Dale Clarkson of Lynchburg; maternal grandparents, Murl L. Wright and Phyllis S. Wright of Forest; paternal grandparents, Earl F. Clarkson Jr. and Barbara M. Clarkson of Madison Heights; maternal great-grandmother, Mabel Schmincke of Lynchburg; three aunts; three cousins; her boyfriend, Shawn Fisher; and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was conducted on June 23 at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Burial followed in Virginia Memorial Park.
Richard L. Donigan
Richard L. Donigan, 89, died on June 13.
He was born March 12, 1919, to Ernest and Clara (Mitchell) Donigan. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores; two brothers, David and Willie; and four sisters, Emmarine, Marylou Jones, Myrine Wilson and Viola Lamb.
He joined the Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church at a very early age. He received his formal education in Amherst County. He moved to Jersey City, N.J., in the late 1940s. He was employed by Swiftline Trucking Co. as a truck driver until he retired after 35 years.
He is survived by a wife of 46 years, Geraldine; two brothers, James and Robert (Bunny) Jones, all of Jersey City, N.J.; two sisters, Mamie Brown of Beltsville, Md., and Helen Franklin of Madison Heights; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was conducted on June 20 in Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.
Nancy Carwile Elder
Nancy Carwile Elder, 70, of Madison Heights, died on June 19. She was the wife of the late James Corbin Elder.
Born Sept. 8, 1937, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Arthur William and Daisy Clark Carwile. She was retired from Allen Morrison and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Carwile Cook, and a nephew, Tommy Cook.
She is survived by one niece; three nephews; and friends.
A graveside service was conducted on June 21 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
Walter Linwood Elder
Walter Linwood Elder, 76, of Lynchburg, died on June 19. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Hite Elder.
He was born March 7, 1932, in Madison Heights, a son of the late Walter Edward and Minnie Coleman Elder. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and four years in the Reserves. He was retired from Craddock-Terry Shoe Co. where he worked as a pattern maker. He was co-owner of Whitten and Elder Leather Business following his retirement. He was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Ron Elder and wife, Elizabeth, and Kenneth Elder and wife, Donna; his grandchildren, Kristy Elder Seamster (Tommy), Ashlee Elder, Cameron Elder and Courtney Elder; and his two great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on June 21 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home. Interment followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
Katie Frances White Henson
Katie Frances White Henson, 95, died on June 15. She was the wife of the late Carroll Eugene Henson.
Born Sept. 22, 1912, in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late George Henry and Alice Brown White. She was a retired employee of Sweet Briar College and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member and played piano and taught Sunday school until her health declined.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Annie Smoot, Bessie Wood and Joan White, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Emma White Harris, and brothers, George Henry White, Woodroe White and Ernest White.
A service honoring her life was conducted on June 21 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Amherst. Burial was in the Amherst Cemetery.
Ethel Rice Langhorne
Ethel Rice Langhorne died on June 16.
She was the middle child born to the late Marvin and Gertrude Rice.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Robert, and a sister, Lelia.
She was born in Amherst County and educated at Madison Heights Elementary and High School. Upon graduation from high school, she followed Lelia to Washington, D.C., and obtained a job at the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing, U.S. Department of Treasury. She worked there until she returned home to marry Randolph Fowler of Boonsboro.
This happy union produced three children, Randolph Jr., Gail and Howard. After Randolph’s untimely death, she later married Richard Langhorne of Lynchburg and they had a daughter, Richie.
When her children went to school, she worked as a school crossing guard. As the children grew older, she accepted a job in sales at Leggett department store where she worked for over 30 years. She also worked part-time in sales at Jackson’s Drugstore.
She is survived by her two daughters, Gail (William) of Williamsburg and Richie (Calvin) of Waldorf, Md.; two sons, Randolph Jr. of Sacramento, Calif., and Howard (Janice) of Lynchburg; four grandchildren; two brothers, Gordon (Muriel) of Washington, D.C., and Cleveland of Lynchburg; 13 nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
A funeral service was conducted on June 21 at Eighth Street Baptist Church. Interment was in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Richard Donald Morcom
Richard Donald Morcom, 74, of Lynchburg, died on June 6.
Born Sept. 10, 1933, in Madison Heights, he was the son of the late George Albert Morcom and the late Viola Stinnett Morcom. He served with the U.S. Army and served several years with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was proprietor of Hamilton Morcom Inc. for 35 years prior to his retirement and was a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church.
He is survived by five children, Rick Morcom and wife, Bernadine, of Forest, Greg Morcom and wife, Kim, of Monroe, Kathy Burgess and husband, Keith, of Powhatan, Sean Morcom of Lynchburg and Shannon Cook and husband, Brad, of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, Randall Morcom, Tiffany Morcom, Hudson Burgess, Connor Burgess, Cassidy Burgess and Avion Cook; two brothers, Jimmy Morcom and wife, Pat, of Monroe and Danny Morcom and wife, Norma, of Arnoldsville, Ga.; and one sister, Shirley Staton and husband, Bobby, of Madison Heights.
A memorial service was conducted on June 22 at Madison Heights Baptist Church.
LaToria Vonta Paige
LaToria Vonta Paige, 27, of Lovingston, died on June 15.
Born in Lynchburg on July 6, 1980, she was a daughter of MacArthur Walter Paige Sr. and the late Mollie Jane Wood Paige. She was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church and had been employed by Subway.
She is survived by her two brothers, Alphonso Paige and his wife, Catoria, and MacArthur Paige Jr. and his wife, Sharon, all of Amherst; two sisters, Kema Williams and her husband, Larry, of Tye River and LaVogdia Paige of Lynchburg; a fiancé, Charles Snead of Lovingston; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was conducted on June 21 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home. Burial followed in the George Washington McDaniel Cemetery in Amherst.
Margaret Ethel Goodloe Small
Margaret Ethel “Pete” Goodloe Small died on June 14.
Born on June 9, 1915, to Benton Hart Goodloe Jr. and Lillian Doris McAlexander Goodloe in Gordonsville, she was known to all during her entire life by her childhood name of “Pete.” She was raised in Gordonsville and Nelson County. In 1933, she married Alvin Glenroy Small and they built a home together in Nellysford.
She was active in her church and its organizations, the Ruritans, The Rose Society, the Garden Club of Nelson County, the Republican Party and the Nelson County Electoral Board to name just a few of her achievements.
When she was well into her 80s, she co-authored a history of Nelson County with Katherine Seaman. June 9, 1997, was designated by Gov. George Allen as “Margaret Small Day” in gratitude for her years of service to the Republican Party and the electoral process in Virginia. She was an avid gardener and she loved to travel.
According to her lifetime wish, she dedicated her body to anatomical research.
She is survived by her sons, Alvin Glenroy Jr. and his wife, Suzanne (Dalton), from Waynesboro, and Carlton Wayne and his wife, Lida (Pierce), from Washington, D.C.; a daughter-in-law, Audrey (Critzer) Small Dulaney and her husband, Buddy, from Nellysford; a brother, Colby Goodloe and his wife, Mary, from Ashland; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, in 1971; her only daughter, Barbara, in 1957; a son, Melvin, in 1977; and a grandson, Mark, in 2000.
Her life will be celebrated on June 28. Please join us at 4 p.m.at Rockfish Valley Baptist Church, where we will gather to wish her a safe journey as she embarks on her last great adventure. There will be a time for testimonials and remembrances for those who would care to make them.
Vivian Ann Mullins Smith
Vivian Ann Mullins Smith, 65, of Suburban Road, Lynchburg, died on June 14.
Born in Halifax County on July 31, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Joshua Wharton and Ester Frances Reynolds Mullins. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and retired from Central Virginia Training Center.
She is survived by eight children, Judith Stinnett and Robert of Lynchburg, Donald Smith and Teresa, Lisa Johns and Roger, Glenn Smith and Dawn, all of Madison Heights, James Smith and Sherry of Rustburg, George Beverley and Wanda of Monroe, Joseph Beverley of Rustburg and Joshua Beverley and Robin of Louisa; one brother, Frank Edward Mullins of Colorado; two sisters, Ruth Wicks of Missouri and Bonnie Wright of Rustburg; 24 grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Kristy McKenna; five great-grandchildren; friends and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Andy Johns; a brother, Robert Wade Mullinsher; and a half brother, Emory Mullins.
Funeral services were held on June 19 at Robinson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Central Baptist Church Cemetery.
Elsie Bailey Tucker
Elsie Bailey Tucker, 82, died June 16. She was the wife of the late Lawrence William Tucker.
Born Feb. 22, 1926, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter Maynard and Robbie Hudson Bailey. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Central Virginia Training Center.
She is survived by a son, W. Barry Tucker and wife, Judy, of Madison Heights; a granddaughter, Wendy Tucker of Bedford; and a grandson, Scott Tucker of Madison Heights.
Graveside services were conducted on June 19 in St. Stephen’s Baptist Church Cemetery.
