Cathy Coleman Agnor
Cathy Coleman Agnor, 55, of Gladstone, died on June 13. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Garvis Joseph Agnor.
Born Dec. 6, 1952, in Rockbridge County, she was a daughter of the late Russell D. Coleman and is survived by her mother, Lorraine Noels Coleman, of Buena Vista. A granddaughter, Abbigail Agnor also preceded her in death. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and belonged to the UMW at Sardis Church.
Survivors also include two sons, Joey Agnor and wife, Penny, of Amherst, and Robbie Agnor and fiance, Brandy Kerr, of Amherst; three brothers, Ronnie Reid and wife, Shirley, Junior Reid and wife, Shirley, and Larry Coleman and wife, Brenda; five sisters, Brenda Hostetter and husband, Carl, Sheila Layton and husband, A.H., Patsy Vest and husband, Ernie, Linda Lilly and husband, Frank, and Brenda Corbin, all of Buena Vista; two grandchildren, Mike and Ryan Agnor; sister-in-law, Patsy Agnor; and one niece.
A graveside service was conducted on June 16 at Briarwood Memorial Gardens.
Pamela Faye Baker
Pamela Faye Baker, 21, of Piney Ridge Road, Pamplin, died on June 10.
She was born April 6, 1987, in Biloxi, Miss. She was an honor’s graduate of Forest Park High School in Prince William County and was attending Longwood University where she was currently on the Dean’s list, majoring in graphic design and photography. She was a former National Champion in Acrobatic Gymnastics, Level 7, and had continued success up through Level 10.
She is survived by her parents, Karen Faye and Bradley Chester Baker of Pamplin; her grandmothers, Betty Jean Davis of Pamplin and Evelyn Faye Baker of Monroe, Wash.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held on June 13 in Piney Ridge United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Selina Lois Jacobs Black
Selina Lois Jacobs Black, 86, of Monroe, died on June 10. She was the wife of the late Thomas E. Black.
Born June 9, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Chester G. and Susan Barker Jacobs. She was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Norman E. Black and wife, Lisa Wright Black; two grandchildren, Misty D. Black and Thomas W. Black; one brother, William H. Jacobs and wife, Kathlene; two sisters, Lucille Jacobs and Jane Robertson; two sisters-in-law, Ruth B. Eades and Norma B. Morrel and husband, John; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life was held on June 13 at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church. Interment followed in Concord Cemetery.
Carrie Mae Branham Johns Branham
Carrie Mae Branham Johns Branham, 82, of Amherst, died on June 11. Twice married, she was the wife of the late Reed Johns and the late Monroe Grover Branham.
Born Jan. 1, 1926, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Ollie and Delia Terry Branham. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Mission and the Monacan Indian Nation.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Lucian Branham, Hayes Branham and Ollie Branham; three sisters, Cammie Johns, Vergie Johns and Tessie Johns; and one grandson, Roy Dillard Johns Jr.
She is survived by one son, Thomas E. Johns and his wife, Judy, and one daughter, Ressie Johns, all of Madison Heights; 10 grandchildren, including Kathy Murphy and Jason Johns, both of Amherst, and Elizabeth Martin of Madison Heights; numerous great-grandchildren; and friends.
A funeral service was conducted on June 14 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment followed in St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery.
Randall Kevin Bryant Sr.
Randall Kevin Bryant Sr., 40, of Salem Road, Spout Spring, died on June 7. He was the husband of Anne Marie Watts Bryant.
Born in Lynchburg, June 21, 1967, he was a son of late Lanzy Bryant and Barbara Savage Bryant Stephens of Gladstone. He was a member of Spout Spring Baptist Church and a foreman for W. D. Hackett Logging.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Randall Kevin Bryant II and girlfriend, Tori Ferguson, and a daughter, Tiffany Susan Bryant, all of Spout Spring; a stepson, Hunter Shaw of Lynchburg; three brothers, Kenneth E. Bryant and wife, Del, of Appomattox, Bernard E. Bryant and wife, Connie, of Wingina, and William C. Bryant of Gladstone; a sister, Anita Bryant Atkins and husband, Edward, of Appomattox; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Clyde Bryant.
Funeral services were held on June 11 at Robinson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Bethel Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Arrington.
Rebecca Jane Stevens Newcomb Coit
Rebecca Jane Stevens “Becky” Newcomb Coit, 70, of Amherst, died on June 11. She was the widow of Leo Perry Coit.
Born in Plympton, Mass., Aug. 18, 1937, she is the daughter of Lois Dean Stevens of Lynchburg and the late Melvin Holmes Stevens.
Although her schooling was interrupted, she was very proud that she graduated with a full high school diploma in 1989. Her career was as a hairdresser, working in several shops in the Rockland, Mass., area. Her customers loved her as she did them, maintaining friendships after her retirement and relocation to Amherst. She most recently worked for the Dollar General in Amherst.
She was president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1788, in Rockland, Mass. As state chairman for POW*MIA, she planned and executed over 400 candlelight ceremonies and flag raisings for POW*MIA in the northeast states. She served as coordinator and master of ceremonies for Vietnam Veterans Day for approximately 20 years. She has been involved in the collection and distribution to Desert Shield and Storm, Bosnia, Afghanistan, the Philippines and the Iraq War. Due to her work on Veteran’s Day events in her local area, she was selected by the Tri-Town Committee to be the first female, non-veteran, in history to serve as grand marshal for the parade in 1999. She also worked with the U.S. Veterans-Vietnam ERA Post 2 SSG, Richard A. Fitts Chapter, as editor of their newsletter.
She received the Civilian Award for Public Service from the U.S. Department of the Army, South Shore Woman of the Year, life membership to the Special Forces Assoc., Fort Bragg, N.C., and the Molly Pitcher Award for outstanding service to the field artillery community.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three children, Nanci McLellan of Amherst, Robin DeMeo of Rockland, Mass., and Leonard Newcomb of Springfield, Vt.; three brothers, Robert Stevens and his wife, Ruby, of Canton, N.C., Richard Stevens of Monroe and Melvin H. Stevens Jr. and his wife, Dee, of Middletown; one sister, Nancy S. Corkum and her husband, David, of Woodstock, Vt.; six grandchildren, Steven Newcomb, Christopher Newcomb, Renee’ DeMeo, Marino DeMeo, Kristinna McLellan and Rebekkah McLellan; one great-grandchild; her former husband, Raymond Irvin Newcomb; and friends.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date with entombment at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass.
Dorothy Iola Duncan
Dorothy Iola Duncan, 95 of Duncan Lane, Afton died on June 12.
She was born on June 26, 1912 in Nellysford, a daughter of the late Robert L. Duncan and Rosa Hughes Duncan.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Iva C. Duncan, Blanche Coffey, Elza Rittenhouse, Stella Rodes, Helen Duncan and Ada Rittenhouse; and her brothers, Virgil Duncan, Burgess Duncan and James Duncan.
She is survived by two sisters, Lillian E. Duncan and Thena D. Bean, both of Afton; her great-nephew, Michael Rodes and niece, Rita Brent her caregivers over the years as well as several other nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on June 15 at Adial Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Adial Baptist Church Cemetery.
Thomas Anthony Irving
Thomas “Tom Cat” Anthony Irving, 59, of Arrington, died on June 8.
Born in Nelson County on April 14, 1949, he was a son of the late James Thomas and Izetta Thompson Irving. He was a member of New Mount Baptist Church.
He is survived by four brother, Michael G. of Lynchburg, Eric M. and Stanley D., both of Arrington, and Leon M. of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Florence Woods of Detroit, Mich., Lucille J. and Elcinda D. Irving of Arrington; one aunt and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service was conducted on June 14 at New Mount Baptist Church. Burial followed in Pleasant View Memorial Gardens.
Lawrence Larry Lee
Lawrence Larry Lee, 82, of Madison Heights, died on June 11. He was the husband of Virginia Lee for 59 years.
He was born Feb. 21, 1926, in Amherst County, a son of the late Albert H. and Mary Godsey Lee. He served the U.S. during World War II. He sneaked into the U.S. Army at the age of 15, then was discovered at the age of 16 and sent home. When he turned 18 and was finally old enough to legally enlist, he chose the U.S. Navy and served with them for many years. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he decided to try his hand at another branch of the military and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served out several more years.
His military days finally being over, he worked the rest of his life as a carpenter. He was an accomplished poet, and published his compilation of poems about life, love, memories, seasons, Christmas and Virginia in 1993.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Wayne Lee and wife, Terry Ted Lee, and Dale Lee and wife, Belinda; his daughters, Karen Langford and husband, Ray, and Mary Ford; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William N. and Alonzo S. Lee. Two other brothers preceded him in death.
A graveside service was conducted on June 14 in Meade Memorial Cemetery.
Evelyn Scott Riner
Evelyn Scott Riner, 83, died on June 9. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy S. Riner.
Born July 8, 1924, in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Ruth Stinson Scott. She was a resident of Madison Heights and several other parts of Virginia in her lifetime. She was a member of Sandy Bottom Christian Church.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Watsie Parrish and Lucille Irvin, and a brother, Ercy Scott.
Survivors include a son, Roy Riner of San Antonio, Texas; her sisters, Gracie Gunter and husband, Dick, and Kitty Humphrey and husband, Ezra; and a brother, P.G. Scott and wife, Barbara; as well as brothers-in-law, Charles B. Irvin, Robert L. Riner and wife, Joyce, and Thomas W. Riner; and numerous, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
At her request, a graveside interment service was conducted on June 14 at Meade Cemetery.
William Thomas Sampson III
William Thomas Sampson III, 61, husband of Kathleen (Kostley) Sampson, of High Meadow Farm, 5240 Morris Mill Road, Swoope, and formerly of Nellysford and Northern Virginia, died June 8.
He was born on June 7, 1947, in Providence, R.I., a son of the late William T. Sampson II, and Joyce (Johnson) Sampson.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, having served in Vietnam. He was a real estate agent with Wintergreen Real Estate. He retired after 21 years as a sergeant from the U. S. Park Police in Washington, DC. He served in its airbourne law enforcement and also as a horse mounted officer in San Francisco. He subsequently worked as senior vice president of an aerospace company.
He was the great grandson of Navy Admiral William T. Sampson, for whom the Navy recently commissioned a fourth destroyer in his name.
In addition to his wife of 23 years, survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sandra Sampson and Matthew and Andrea Sampson, all of Chesapeake, Thomas Zajdel Jr., and his wife, Jennifer of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Jill Sampson Messier and her husband, Marcus of Manassas; a sister, Cynthia Sampson Dahl and her husband Martin, of Poulsbo, Wash.; a “brother in spirit” Thomas E. Sampson and his wife, Martha, of Tigard, Ore.; nine grandchildren; three nieces; a nephew; and his former wife, Beverly Sampson.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda W. Miller of Portland, Oregon in February 2008.
A memorial service was conducted on June 14 at High Meadow Farm, 5240 Morris Mill Road in Swoope.
Patricia Feagans Wariner
Patricia “Pat” Feagans Wariner, 65, of Concord, died on June 14. She was the wife of the late Wiley Whitlock Wariner Jr.
She was born on Sept. 26, 1942, in Lynchburg. She was the daughter of Irene Arthur Feagans of Big Island and the late Glenmore Feagans. She retired as co-owner and operator of the Daug Haus, where she worked with her son, Tony, for 15 years.
She was very involved with the community and her church, Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she served as church lay leader and with the United Methodist Women. She also served on the Patrick Henry Boys Home Board, the Social Service Board, the Concord Rescue Squad Board, and was a member of the Con-Terra Women’s Club and the Young Homemakers Club. She was recently given the Honorary Lifetime Member of the Concord Rescue Squad award.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her children, Teresa Thomas and her husband, Steve, and Anthony Wariner and his wife, Jean; her grandchildren, Evan and Tori Thomas, and Cortnie Wariner, all of Concord; a sister, Peggy Callahan and her husband, Larry, of Lynchburg; and a brother, Glenn Feagans and his wife, Kathy, of Bedford.
A memorial service was held on June 17 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Priscilla Ann Taylor Washington
Priscilla Ann Taylor Washington, 47 of High Point, N.C., formerly of Nelson County, died on June 9.
She was born on June 19, 1960 in Buckingham County, a daughter of the late Obrey Woodson and Sally Gregory Anderson of Buckingham.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Winfred L. Washington of Lovingston; a son, David Mandrell Taylor of Arrington; two daughters, Phyllis M. Gregory and Latasha (Moe) Taylor, both of Arrington; a sister, Sylvia Anderson, of Charlottesville; three brothers, Melvin Gregory of Farmville, Larry Anderson, Steve Anderson and wife Barbara, all of Arvonia; two stepsons, Winfred D. Washington of Arrington and Eric L. Washington of Piney River; two step-sisters, Lesia Woodson and Paula Carter; two step brothers, Stewart and Obrey Woodson Jr.; eight grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on June 16 at Montreal Baptist Church in Shipman with burial in the church cemetery.
