Charles A. Farrell
Charles A. “Chuck” Farrell, 82, of Palmyra, died June 5.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel Hurd Farrell.
He was born March 14, 1926, in New York. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He retired from Northrop Grumman where he served in management.
He is survived by his wife, Pam. S. Farrell of Palmyra; one daughter, Merrilee Scida and her husband, Guy, of Virginia; one stepson, Rodney Cook of Palmyra; two stepdaughters, Janelle Locklear and Julie Cook, both of Palmyra; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 9 at the Sheridan Funeral Home in Kents Store. Interment followed at the Monticello Memorial Gardens.
Karen Sue Franklin Hudson, 51, of Schuyler, died on June 1.
Born April 26, 1957, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of Frieda S. Franklin of Charlottesville and the late Carl H. Franklin.
She graduated from Charlottesville High School in 1975. She married Thomas W. Hudson and recently celebrated their 30th anniversary on May 20, 2008.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Thomas W. Hudson of Schuyler; her brother, Keith Franklin and his wife, Betty, of Earlysville; two nieces; four nephews; her sister-in-law, Joann Brown; and friends.
A graveside service was held on June 5 in the Holly Memorial Gardens.

Marion A. Fields
Marion A. Fields, 74, of Greensboro, N.C., died on June 7.
A memorial service was held on June 10 at New Garden Friends Meeting. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
A native of Tye River, he was born on Nov. 1, 1933. He was the son of Robert Ashley Fields and Evelyn Jane Bailey Fields.
He was a graduate of Lovingston High School. He was a member of New Garden Friends Meeting.
He was employed as a dispatcher for Norfolk & Southern Railroad for 43 years and was a member of the Railroad Retiree’s Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, he wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Fields and brother, Robert C. Fields.
He is survived by three sons, David Marion Fields of Stokesdale, N.C., Kevin Ashley Fields and wife Kimberly Sheilds of Greensboro, N.C., and Robert Edward Fields and wife Joye Beth Clayton; two step-children, Fletcher Hartwell Hyler, III, of Calif. And Connie Susan Hyler Stone and husband Elliot, of Martinsville; two sisters, Margaret Bryant and Dorothy Fields Scirocco, both of Amherst; six grandchildren, Gretchen, Janie, Kevin Jr., Brittany, Dylan and Ash and two great-grandchildren.

Kathreen H. Jennings
Kathreen H. Jennings, 83, of Charlottesville died on June 2.
Born May 27, 1925, in Hartford, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Kathryn Harris.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lee Lay Jennings and her sister, Nancy Ghent.
She was retired from Centel.
Surviving her are three children, Shelby J. Miller and her husband, Cliff, of Scottsville, Lee Lay Jennings II of Charlottesville and Lucinda J. Bryant and her husband, Bob, of Shipman; four grand-children, Christopher H. Ward and his wife, Becky, Scotti M. Waring, Chad J. Bryant and Sarah B. Bryant; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marion Walker of Westerly, R.I.
A memorial service was held on June 11 at University Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held in Montgomery, N.Y. at a later date.

Ivan Adrian Lowery
Ivan Adrian Lowery, 73, of Lowry, died on June 5.
He was born May 25, 1935, in Beckley, W.Va., a son of the late Ivan Lowery and Lillian Cox Lowery. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Mitchem, and a brother, Wade Lowery.
He was a retired employee of General Electric and Ericsson of Lynchburg after 29 years, and was a member of the Bedford Lifesaving Crew for 11 years. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force for 12 years.
Surviving are his wife of many years, Helen Walker Lowery; a son, Larry Adrian Lowery and wife, Joanne, of Madison Heights; he was the proud grandfather to two granddaughters, Felice Lowery and Andrea Lowery, both of Madison Heights; a sister, Karen Tocado and husband, Rick, of Richmond; a brother, C.E. Lowery and wife, Carol, of Tonawanda, N.Y.; many friends, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on June 9 at Updike Funeral Chapel in Bedford. Interment followed in Virginia Memorial Park.

Nita Earl Cash Lee Martin
Nita Earl Cash Lee Martin, 73, of Lynchburg, died on June 4.
She was born June 5, 1934, in Amherst County, a daughter of the late James Edward and Mary E. Massie Cash. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, her first husband, Harold Kennith Lee, and her son, Kennith Ray Lee. She attended Central Baptist Church and was a retired seamstress.
She is survived by her companion, Phillip Wayne Martin of Lynchburg; her daughters, Brenda Lee Jackson and Linda Lee Martin, both of Madison Heights; her grandchildren, Oneal Martin Jr. and Juanita Russell Chittum, both of Lynchburg, and Kennith Jarman of Rustburg; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted on June 9 in Virginia Memorial Park.

Peyton Roger Martin

Peyton Roger Martin, 69, of Lynchburg, died on June 1.
Born March 13, 1939, in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Manson Peyton Martin and Carrie Mae Martin, who survives, of Lynchburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was owner of a shoe repair business.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin W. and John C. Martin.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Kim Martin Rivera and husband, Louie, of Norfolk and Marty Ann Lipscomb and husband, Larry, of Madison Heights; two grandsons, Louis Kasey Rivera and Karter Lee Rivera, both of Norfolk; and three brothers, Carl Martin of Lynchburg, Phillip Martin and wife, Jeanette, of Forest and Ernest Myers Martin of Lynchburg.
A graveside service was conducted on June 5 at Virginia Memorial Park.

Nettie Florence Williams Mays
Nettie Florence Williams Mays, 90, of Arrington, died June 2.
Born in Nelson County on Oct. 7, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Joseph L. and Frances C. Morris Williams. She was a member of Nelson United Methodist Church, where she participated in the United Methodist Women’s Group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Elwood Mays; a son, Arthur Mays; a daughter, Ruby L. Hughes; six brothers, one sister and a granddaughter.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Marshall Mays and his wife, Donna of Tampa, Fla. and Donald C. Mays and his wife, Diana of Arrington; one daughter, Shirley M. Jennings and her husband, Carroll of Java; one son-in-law, Sam Hughes Sr. of Shipman; one brother, Everett Williams and his wife, Mackie of Arrington; two sisters, Lena Hart of Shipman and Allie Weik of Appomattox; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted on June 7 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home. Burial was in Centenary Memorial Cemetery.

Edith Viar McGlothlin

Edith Viar McGlothlin, 86, of Lynchburg, died on June 6. She was the wife of the late Charles James McGlothlin.
Born May 5, 1922, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Massie Odell Viar and the late Clara Wilcher Viar.
She is survived by two children, Charles L. McGlothlin and wife, Kathy, of Front Royal and Barbara M. Richardson of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Christine Greene, Angela Maness and Robert McCall; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Massie R. Viar and wife, Marion, of Lynchburg, Robert C. Viar and wife, Janice, of Cloverdale and Jimmie Viar of Lynchburg; and two sisters, Katherine V. Elmore of Lynchburg and Ellene V. McGlothlin and her late husband, Gilbert, of Lynchburg.
A graveside service was conducted June 9 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Richard Donald Morcom
Richard Donald Morcom, 74, of Lynchburg, died on June 6.
Born Sept. 10, 1933 in Madison Heights, he was the son of the late George Albert Morcom and the late Viola Stinnett Morcom. He served with the U.S. Army and for several years with the U.S. Coast Guard Aux. He was proprietor of Hamilton Morcom Inc., for 35 years prior to his retirement and was a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church. He was a passionate sailor and a skilled navigator.
He is survived by five children, Rick Morcom and wife, Bernadine, of Forest, Greg Morcom and wife, Kim, of Monroe, Kathy Burgess and husband, Keith, of Powhatan, Sean Morcom of Lynchburg and Shannon Cook and husband, Brad, of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, Randall, Tiffany, Hudson, Connor, Cassidy and Avion; two brothers, Jimmy Morcom and wife, Pat, of Monroe and Danny Morcom and wife, Norma, of Arnoldsville, Ga.; and one sister, Shirley Staton and husband, Bobby, of Madison Heights.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date and will be announced.

Harry Boulden Pugh
Harry Boulden Pugh, 80, of Charlottesville, on June 4.
Born Aug. 7, 1927, in Batesville, he was the son of the late Lacy E. and Mary Elizabeth Wade Pugh. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harold Pugh; a grand-daughter, Tracey Lynn Glass.
He retired from Acme Visible Records and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret V. Pugh; two daughters, Mary Lane and her husband, John, of Palmyra and Brenda Mawyer and her husband, Eddie, of Afton; one sister, Julia Mawyer of Afton; one brother, Silas Pugh and his wife, Stella, of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, John Lane Jr., Nathan Lane and his wife, Cory, Cindy Mawyer and Ed Mawyer Jr. and his wife, Lindsey; three great-grand-children; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was conducted on June 6 at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Henry V. Rice
Henry V. Rice, 88, of Big Island, died on June 2. He was the husband of Helen Lipscomb Rice.
Born July 13, 1919, in Bedford County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Davis and Estelle Wade Rice. He was a retired construction worker and drill operator.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Maggie Henson Rice, and a son, Tommy Rice.
He is survived by 11 children, Calvin Rice and his wife, Mary Jane, of Bedford, Ernest Rice of Hampton, Helen Snead of Schuyler, Loraine Biar and her husband, Bob, of Belair, Md., William Rice, Martha Fletcher, Ricky Rice, Kenny Rice, Charlotte Rice, Shirley Drumheller and her husband, Danny, and Ryland Rice and his wife, Tara; one stepdaughter, Florence Tillman; three half-brothers, Herbert D. Rice and his wife, Della, and Roger L. Rice and his wife, Rose, both of Coleman Falls, and Ryland F. Rice and his wife, Cassie, of Evington; two half-sisters, Ann White and her husband, Jack, of Coleman Falls, and Katherine Brown and her husband, Worth, of Baltimore, Md.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted June 4 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment followed in Big Island Cemetery.

Edward Vernon Rose Jr.
Edward Vernon Rose Jr. died on June 3.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1943, to the late Madeline Brown Rose and Vernon Edward Rose Sr. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Randy L. Rose.
He was a retired employee of the City of Lynchburg for 31 years and Randolph College, formerly Randolph Macon Women’s College, for 32 years. He was a faithful member of the Hillsman Club and a dedicated fisherman. He joined St. Mary’s Baptist Church at an early age and was a member of the Trustee Board.
He is survived by his fiancee, Marie A. Clark of Hurt; two daughters, Cecilia L. Rose of Evington and Shelly R. Glover (Joseph) of Lynchburg; two children, Lewis Clark Jr. of Lynchburg and Marie L. Barbour (Jo) of Hurt; two brothers, Ronnie L. Rose of Amherst and Anthony L. Brown of Greensboro, N.C.; seven sisters, Janice R. Grooms, Sheila D. Brown, both of Lynchburg, Annie M. Rose, Carolyn R. Richerson, Wendy D. Rose, of Amherst, Peggy R. Collins (Stephforn) of Madison Heights and Maxine P. Scott (Ronald) of Campbell County; five grandchildren, Symphany M. Jones, Tyler O. Boyd, Symmone R. Glover, Jakia M. and Monique J. Barbour; and a host of many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was conducted on June 7 at St. Mary’s Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Jesse James Showalter
Jesse James Showalter, 69, died on June 8. He was the husband of Dorothy McCauley Showalter.
Born Jan. 22, 1939, in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Charlie Joseph and Sadie Stratton Showalter.
He is survived by a son, Sonny James Showalter of Amherst; a daughter, Jessie Belle Hammond of Lynchburg; three brothers, Ray Showalter and wife, Alice, and Henry Showalter and wife, Hester, both of Gladstone, and Dean Showalter of Amherst; and three granddaughters, Jamie Harper and Carrie Tomlin, both of Amherst, and Jennifer Johnson of Lynchburg.
Graveside services were conducted on June 10 at the Evans Family Cemetery.

Erskine Nathaniel Turner
Erskine Nathaniel Turner, 78, of North Garden, died on June 2.
He was born on April 6, 1930, to the late Earston Turner and Marjorie Bowles Turner of North Garden. He was preceded in death by his sister, Alice B. Coleman; his brothers, Vernon T. Turner and William H. Turner.
He was a Deacon at Zion Baptist Church and was very active in church and the community.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the Reverend Shirley A. Turner; two sons, Nathaniel E. Turner and his wife, Brenda, and Emanuel Turner; and two daughters, Lana T. Chapman and her husband, Eric, and Sharlene Murdaugh; one brother, John J. Bowles and his wife, Catherine; mother-in-law, Anna Belle Thompkins, four sisters-in-law, Lorraine Turner, Catherine Bowles, Geneva Thompson and Patricia Thompkins; one brother-in-law, James Coleman and a host of other family members and friends.
A funeral service was held on June 7 at Zion Baptist Church in North Garden. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
