Homer Clark Barnett I
Homer Clark Barnett I, 74, of Roseland, died on June 26.
Born June 13, 1934, he was a son of the late James Titus and Ella Hill Barnett. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Tyro and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lecie Toms Barnett; four sons, Homer Barnett II of Roseland, Estrello and Lucas Barnett of Lynchburg, and Brion Barnett of Amherst; one daughter, Tamara Barnett of Madison Heights; two daughter-in-laws, Tammy T. and Brenda L. Barnett; nine grandchildren, Simone, Kelsey, Homer Barnett III, Alcindor, Myra, Jeremiah, Zachary, Tamela and Ashleigh; three great-grandchildren; one half-brother, Andrew Barnett of Roseland; seven sisters-in-law, Sarah Thompson, Emma Jackson, Belle Thomas, Nancy Carter, Ruth, Regina and Bertha Toms; five brothers-in-law, Matthew, Reginald and Ira Toms, Isaish Thompson, and Leonard Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Santresa C. Barnett; one sister, Maxine; and six brothers, Arthur, Edgar, Albert, Talmadge, Elmore and Nathaniel.
A funeral service was conducted on July 1 at Oak Hill Baptist Church in Roseland. Burial followed in Oak Hill Memorail Gardens with military honors by V.F.W. Post #7701 of Colleen.
William Carl Burnley
William Carl Burnley, 69, of Madison Heights, died on July 2. He was the husband of Eva Criswell Burnley for 47 years.
Born in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Boyd Lewis Burnley and Mencie Bryant Burnley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, B. Hoskins Burnley.
He was a family man, enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing his harmonica. He formerly worked for General Electric Corp. and was retired from Ericsson after 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by two daughters, Debra B. Fitzgerald and her husband, Barry and Carla B. Burford and her husband, Glenn, all of Madison Heights; one brother, Robert Burnley and his wife, Phyllis, of Monroe; one sister, Evelyn B. Sage and her husband, Bob, of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Melissa Jennings and her fiance, Ben Larkin, Crystal Jennings and her fiance, Michael Carson and Kody Burford, all of Madison Heights and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted on July 7 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
Mary Alice Coussoulos
Mary Alice Coussoulos, 69, of Amherst died on June 25.
She was born April 28, 1939, in Altavista. She was the daughter of Francis Gaddy Lukens and the late Charles Anderson Huffman. She is survived by her son, Evan Coussoulos, and siblings Donald Hoffman, Kenneth Hoffman, David Viar and Leah Viar.
She received an AB in psychology and her teaching certificate at Randolph-Macon Women’s College. She did graduate work in resource management at the University of Virginia and George Washington University.
She worked in Lexington as a social worker, in Campbell County at the Leesville Road Elementary School as their first special education teacher, taught at Fairfax County Public Schools and the Loudoun County Day School, and taught talented and gifted and special ed students in math, science and art at Montgomery County Public Schools for 21 years. She sponsored the drama club, and volunteered extensively for the schools and students.
A service in Lynchburg will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 3 p.m. on July 19. A celebration of life will be held in August 2008 in Waterford.
Ronnie Edward Kennon
Ronnie Edward Kennon, 64, of Lynchburg died on July 4. He was the husband of Jane McMaster Kennon for 42 years.
He was born on Feb. 14, 1944 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Curtis W. Kennon and Blanche Carrico Harper. He loved his cars and enjoyed his pets but was best known for being the owner of Kennon’s Roofing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rosa B. Carrico.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Ronald E. Kennon and his wife Catherine of Athol, Mass., Ronnie D. Kennon and his wife Hollie of Monroe, and Joe E. Kennon and his wife Emily of Gladys; two brothers, Calvin Kennon of Madison Heights and Clarence Kennon of Appomattox; two sisters, Laverne K. Taylor of Hampton and Ginger K. Atkins of Lynchburg; four step-brothers and one step-sister; his step-mother, Gracie B. Kennon of Appomattox; his aunt, Margie C. Fortune of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren, and numerous cousins and close friends.
A memorial service was held on July 9 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg.
John David Reichard
John David Reichard, 82, of Madison Heights died on July 1. He was the husband of the late Helen Hamilton Reichard.
Born May 17, 1926, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late William Thomas Reichard Sr. and the late Iona Mae Nash Reichard. He was a former owner and operator of Blue Ridge Lithographic Corp. and was retired from Digitype Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Faith Bible Church.
He was a fingerprint specialist for the FBI and served the Office of U.S. Chief Counsel at the Nuremberg International Tribunal, following World War II.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Thomas Reichard Jr. and Richard Frederick Reichard, and one sister, Mary Reichard Hosgood.
He is survived by three daughters, Sandra R. Campbell and her husband, Ronnie, Patricia R. Wood and her husband, Don, and Carolyn R. Phelps, all of Madison Heights; one brother, Daniel Henry Reichard and his wife, Joan, of Moneta; one sister, Catherine Reichard DeVito of Hartford, Conn.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted on July 3 at Faith Bible Church. Interment followed in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.
Nadine Logwood Riley
Nadine Logwood Riley, 68, of Lynchburg, died July 3. She was the wife of the late Ervin Dillard Riley, who passed away May 26, 1989.
Born Aug. 21, 1939, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Loxley Christopher Logwood and the late Christine Giles Logwood Mitchell. She was a retired nurse and had been employed at Lynchburg General Hospital and had also done private duty nursing.
She is survived by two children, Wyndall Riley and wife, Wanda, of Madison Heights and Leslie Riley McKenna of Lynchburg; three grandsons, Jason Riley of Madison Heights, and Ben J. Wright III and Dakota Wright, both of Rustburg; two sisters, Patricia Burley of Lynchburg and Debbie Staton of Evington; and one brother, Leonard Currier of Lynchburg.
A graveside service will be conducted at a later date at Spring Hill Cemetery.
Virginia Harris Roberts
Virginia “Ginny” Harris Roberts, 82, of Elon died on July 1. She was the wife of the late Everett “PeeWee” Roberts.
She was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Lynchburg to the late Blanche Inez Harris Staton and Julian Warmsley Harris.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Caldwell and Elizabeth Riley, and a great-grandchild, Cain William Bass Crist.
She is survived by her three children; a son, Everett Harris Roberts and wife, Cindy, of Woodbridge, and two daughters, Jo Anne Bass and husband, G.W., of Lynchburg, Lori Mason and husband, Bill, of Elon; a grandson, Jeremy Ware and his girlfriend, Kristal; four granddaughters, Brooke Biggs, Nicki Crist and husband, Lee, Tricia Tyree and husband, Brandon, and Lauren Mason; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Francis Lamb of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Jewell Harris of Moneta; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Elon Presbyterian Church where she sung in the choir and was active in different groups of the church.
Funeral services were conducted on July 3 at Elon Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Doris Hesse Tatlock
Doris Hesse Tatlock of Madison Heights, died on June 29. She was the wife of the late Rev. Robert S. Tatlock.
She is survived by her children, Kathi T. Glenn and her husband, Fodie Fulks, Karen T. Paige and her fiance, Odea West, R. Karl Tatlock and his wife, Teresa, Kristen D. Tatlock and her husband, C. Thomas Christian, and Kandace B. Tatlock; her grandchildren, Jimmie Smith, Amie Clowdis and her husband, Chris, Melissa Ferguson, Allison Brown and her husband, Cordell, Brittney Tatlock, Robert Tatlock and his fiance, Krystal Thacker, Kody Tatlock, Leigh Christian Davidson and her husband, Kevin, and Loran Christian; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
She was born March 27, 1930, in Weirton, W.Va., the daughter of the late Carl and Katherine Hesse. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Hesse, and her sister, Lois Becker.
She graduated from Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va., and taught elementary and middle school in Amherst County until her retirement in 1985. She was a longtime member of Madison Heights Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where she served over the years as choir director, deaconess, elder and elder emeritus. She also served as choir director at Forest Road United Methodist Church.
A celebration of her life was held on July 2 at the funeral home and burial followed at Briarwood Memorial Gardens.
Alice Campbell Thomas
Alice Campbell Thomas, 87, of Spout Spring, died on July 6. She was the wife of the late Harvey Alton Thomas.
Born in Amherst County on May 27, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Manuel Campbell and Bessie Pribble Campbell. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Dennis Torrence of Appomattox, Debbie and Richard Johnson of Mechanicsville, and Kay and Jimmy Boundurant of Appomattox; one sister, Louise C. Cash of Amherst; three grandchildren, Zane Torrence and wife Sheila, of Appomattox, Thomas Johnson of Mechanicsville, and Elizabeth Johnson Corder and husband Justin, of Mechanicsville; two great-grandchidren; numerous nieces and nephews; brother-in-law and wife, Morris and Jean Thomas of Amherst; and sister-in-law, Lillian M. Campbell of Lynchburg.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Manuel Campbell Jr.
Funeral services were held on July 9 at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Clifford. Burial followed in Amherst Cemetery.
Vicky Sligh Tyree
Vicky Sligh Tyree, 50, of Rocky Mount, died on July 1.
Born Oct. 28, 1957, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Carl Edward Sligh and the late Helen Tyree Sligh. She was a member of the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue Association, the Wildlife Association and the SPCA.
She is survived by two children, Helena Shay Poe and husband, Joe, of Madison Heights and Frankie Hudson and fiancee, Candice, of Bedford; three grandchildren, John Poe, Kelsey Poe and Zoie Hudson; two sisters, Becky Lee and husband, Bill, of North Garden and Delores Crist and husband, Jimmy, of Madison Heights; her fiance, Billy Walker of Rocky Mount; a stepbrother, Larry Simpson of Madison Heights; and a stepsister, Kim Pugh of Madison Heights.
Funeral services were conducted on July 5 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment followed in Meade Cemetery.
Mary Ardell Willis
Mary Ardell Willis, 81, of James River Road died on June 30.
She was born June 12, 1927, in Nelson County, a daughter of the late John P. Martin Sr. and Jannie Hickman Martin.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lee Willis Sr.; a son, Henry Lee Willis Jr.; four sisters; and three brothers.
She was a member of Montreal Baptist Church in Shipman.
She is survived by her three daughters, Sandra Willis of Shipman, Debra Perrow and husband, Curtis, of Laurel, Md., and Peggy Foster and husband, Eugene, of Clinton, Md.; a sister, Vera A. Briggs and husband, Wayne, of Shipman; two granddaughters, Veronica Perrow of Bowie, Md., and Yolanda Scott Weston of Rockville, Md.; two grandsons, Rodney Scott and Corey Perrow, both of Laurel, Md.; three great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; friends and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service was held on July 5 at Bright Hope Baptist Church in Lovingston. Interment followed in the Martin Family Cemetery at Shipman.
