Virginia Tech has withdrawn its offer of a scholarship to Amherst County High School quarterback Peter O’Brian Rose.

Rose, 18, was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of distribution of drugs within 1,000 feet of the school, both felonies, and two counts of distribution of marijuana.

“Each scholarship offer we make is contingent upon a number of requirements, one of which is maintaining the high standards required of each recruit in their community, school and on the football field.  I am disappointed that this action was necessary,” Tech coach Frank Beamer said in a news release.

Rose was the Lancers’ starting quarterback in 2006 and 2007. He helped lead the team to back-to-back state titles in his junior and senior years and was named Virginia Group AA Player of the Year by the Associated Press and the Virginia High School League Coaches Association.

He signed a letter of intent with Virginia Tech in February.

Rose is one of seven current and former Amherst County High School students facing drug charges following a 10-month undercover operation in which a sheriff’s deputy posed as a student.

Another student charged — Jody Vaughn Ramsey, 18 — is a senior and the starting catcher for the Lancers varsity baseball team. He was charged with one count of distribution of marijuana.

The remaining students are juveniles; police have not released their names.

Amherst County this is a let down but we need tight security at the High School. I graduated from ACHS in 1997 and the day of just having the Law Enforcement as security has in my mind caused a great deal of confussion. My thought would be to hire security at the high school and start a new program without having undercover adult law enforcement with the students. I respect our law enforcement but this is causing the students who have potential for great things to have their life messed up for life. I am a citzen in Amherst and a graduate.
