A Madison Heights woman has been charged with embezzling $4,000 from the county Solid Waste Department.
Tammy Bittner Fitzgerald, 42, of Melwood Drive, faces a single count of embezzlement. She was a part-time employee.
Authorities said in a news release that a routine internal audit of department records indicated “numerous accounting discrepancies.”
An Amherst County Sheriff’s Office investigation showed about $4,000 was missing.
“The county recognizes the necessity and obligation to protect public funds,” County Administrator Rodney Taylor said in the release. “We have and will continue to hold this trust in the highest regard and will prosecute any theft to the fullest extent of the law.”
Taylor has ordered a full audit of the Solid Waste Department’s bookkeeping, record-keeping and money-handling procedures.
