The state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke is working to identify skeletal remains discovered Saturday north of Madison Heights, according to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office.
The skeleton was discovered by local residents in a wooded area near Coleman Road about a mile south of the intersection of U.S. 29 and Virginia 130. Authorities said shoes and some clothing remained on the body.
Capt. C.D. Doss said that a semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun and a spent casing also were found near the skeleton.
Doss said the remains had to be sent to the Roanoke lab for confirmation that the skeleton is human. However, he said he has no reason to believe the remains are not human.
The lab also will attempt to identify the remains. Authorities have not said whether they believe the skeleton belongs to a male or female.
There are no active missing person reports in Amherst County, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
